Milk Thistle – SILYBUM MARIANUM . A stunning native foliage plant with flat rosettes of large, prickly leaves which are strikingly lined and marbled with broad white stripes. Reaching 4 ft the plant produces large heads of attractive scented rose / purple-colored flowers loved by bees and butterflies alike. Young leaves can be used in salads and young flower heads like Artichokes.
Cultivation Advice
- Best sown directly to growing location 5-10 mm deep Mar -Apr for flowering the same year or Jun? Sep for flowering the following season.
- Prefers poor to medium fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Will not over-winter well in wet locations.
- When large enough to handle thin to 60 cm between plants.
- The variety will self-seed if left to fully mature.
