VEGETABLE CARROT-RED SAMURAI F1

VEGETABLE CARROT RED SAMURAI F1. Bred in Japan, Carrot ‘F1 Red Samurai’ produces long tapered 28 to 35 cm roots of uniform bright red skin with a crisp texture and sweet pink inner flesh they hold their colour well after cooking.  Best sown as second early, maincrop variety for harvesting June to September.

Cultivation Advice

  • Choose loose, well-draining soil to encourage straight and healthy root growth. Remove debris and stones that could impede the carrots’ development. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH, around 6.0 to 6.8.
  • Sow the seeds directly into the ground, placing them about a quarter to a half-inch deep. Follow the spacing guidelines provided on the seed packet.
  • Ensure consistent moisture, especially during germination and early growth. Avoid waterlogged conditions but maintain even moisture to prevent cracking or drying out.
  • As the seedlings sprout and develop, thin them to the recommended spacing to allow ample room for proper root growth and avoid overcrowding.
  • Provide full sun exposure (6-8 hours daily) for optimal growth and vibrant color development in Red Samurai F1 carrots.
  • Apply a light layer of mulch to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and inhibit weed growth. Keep the area around the carrots weed-free to minimize competition for nutrients.
  • Red Samurai F1 carrots generally do not require heavy feeding. Prior to planting, incorporate organic matter or a balanced fertilizer into the soil for better growth.
  • Monitor for common pests and diseases that affect carrots. Utilize preventive measures like row covers or organic pest control methods to deter pests naturally.
  • Red Samurai F1 carrots typically mature in about 65-75 days. Harvest when they reach the desired size and color. Gently pull them from the soil, being careful not to damage the roots of VEGETABLE CARROT.
  • After harvesting, remove the carrot tops and store the carrots in a cool, humid environment. Refrigeration or a root cellar can help preserve their freshness for longer.
  • Ensure consistent watering to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely between waterings, especially during the critical germination and root development stages.
  • When thinning the seedlings, use scissors to snip off the excess plants instead of pulling them out. This minimizes root disturbance for the remaining carrots.
  • Apply a thin layer of mulch around the carrots to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. However, avoid placing mulch directly on top of young seedlings, as it might hinder their growth.
  • Regularly inspect RED SAMURAI F1  growing carrots. If any part of the root becomes exposed to sunlight, cover it gently with soil to prevent the development of green shoulders, which can lead to bitterness.
  • Prior to planting, ensure the soil is well-tilled to a depth of at least 12 inches. Loose soil encourages straight root growth and reduces the likelihood of misshapen carrots.
  • Consider planting seeds in intervals for a staggered harvest. This method ensures a continuous supply of fresh Red Samurai F1 carrots rather than a single large harvest.
  • Monitor soil temperatures for optimal germination. Carrots prefer soil temperatures between 50°F to 85°F (10°C to 29°C) for best growth.
  • Despite being relatively resistant, keep an eye out for common pests and diseases. Implement preventive measures and maintain good garden hygiene.
  • Taste-test carrots to determine the best time for harvest. Carrots harvested slightly smaller can often be sweeter and more tender than larger ones.
