Cultivation Advice

  • Select a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil. Lupins generally prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Ensure the soil is rich in organic matter. You can amend the soil with compost before planting to improve fertility.
  • You can sow Lupin Pixie Delight Mixed seeds directly into the garden bed in early spring or start them indoors a few weeks before the last frost date and transplant them once they’ve established a few true leaves.
  • Space the plants according to their mature size to allow proper airflow and prevent overcrowding.
  • Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant.
  • Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and blooming.
  • While Pixie Delight Lupins are compact, providing some support like stakes or small cages can help prevent taller stems from flopping over, especially in windy conditions or when they are in full bloom.
  • Regularly deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. This also prevents the plant from putting energy into seed production, promoting more flower production.
  • Keep an eye out for aphids, snails, or slugs, which can occasionally target Lupins. Promptly address any pest issues using appropriate methods.
  • Lupins can be susceptible to powdery mildew or rust in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimize these fungal diseases.
  • In colder climates, apply a layer of mulch over the plants in late fall to protect the roots during winter.
  • Lupins work well with many garden plants. Consider planting them alongside other perennials with similar sun and water requirements for a vibrant and diverse garden.
  • Trim back spent flower spikes to encourage the growth of new blooms. Additionally, deadhead the plant after flowering to prevent self-seeding, if desired, and to encourage a longer blooming period.
  • Mulching not only helps in moisture retention but also acts as insulation during extreme temperatures. Refresh the mulch layer each year to maintain its effectiveness.
  • Lupins prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil. Consider periodic soil testing and amend with organic matter like compost to maintain soil fertility.
  • Every few years, consider dividing mature Lupin plants to rejuvenate them. Divide clumps in early spring or fall, replanting the divided segments in prepared soil.
  • Propagation through seeds is also an option. Collect seeds from mature plants and sow them in the desired area or in containers indoors before the last frost.
  • Aim for consistent moisture but avoid waterlogged conditions. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, especially during dry spells or in hot weather.
  • Providing support is particularly important as the plants begin to produce their beautiful flower spikes. Install stakes or use small cages around individual plants to keep them upright.
  • Proper spacing between plants and good air circulation can reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Remove any infected or damaged foliage promptly to prevent the spread of diseases.
  • Regularly inspect plants for pests like aphids or caterpillars. Consider using natural remedies or insecticidal soaps to manage these pests without harming beneficial insects.
  • While Lupins generally thrive in garden beds, certain compact varieties like Pixie Delight Mixed can be cultivated in containers. Ensure adequate drainage and use quality potting mix.
