 Cultivation advice

  • Plant Mesclun lettuce seeds in early spring or late summer for a fall harvest. It thrives in cooler temperatures.
  • Choose a location with partial shade to full sun, especially in hotter climates.
  • Ensure the soil is loose, well-draining, and amended with compost for fertility. Mesclun lettuce prefers a slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
  • Scatter Mesclun seeds directly onto the prepared soil surface, gently pressing them in or covering lightly with soil.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist for successful germination.
  • Mesclun lettuce prefers partial shade in warmer climates but can tolerate full sun in cooler regions.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Avoid waterlogging.
  • As the seedlings emerge, thin them to maintain proper spacing. Space plants according to the variety’s recommended spacing, usually around 4-6 inches apart.
  • Incorporate a balanced fertilizer or compost into the soil before planting to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth.
  • Apply a thin layer of mulch to retain soil moisture and prevent weed growth around the lettuce plants. Regularly remove weeds to prevent competition for nutrients.
  • Begin harvesting Mesclun lettuce when the leaves are young and tender, typically within 3-4 weeks after sowing.
  • Use scissors or simply cut the outer leaves of the plants, allowing the center leaves to continue growing for future harvests.
  • Mesclun lettuce blends offer a variety of flavors and textures, perfect for salads, sandwiches, or as a bed for various dishes.
