Witkiem Broad Bean A popular heirloom, ‘ Witkiem’ produces early maturing beans on large plants. It loves cooler weather and tolerates some frost, making it perfect for planting in the spring early on. Sow in directly moist, well-draining sandy soil rich in organic matter. Plant ‘Witkiem’ beans in full sun, spacing them 8-10 inches apart along rows that are 18-24 inches apart. Throughout the growth cycle, maintain even soil moisture and do not over saturate. You will find they taste best when young and tender so this is something to keep your eye on! Culinary tips: beans from ‘Witkiem’ are widely applicable in the kitchen, good for soups and stews or a tasty salad (also raw) but also as part of your meal. Regular harvesting also promotes a steady production. Watch for pests like aphids and bean weevils – if you see them, treat with an organic pest control. Cultivation Advice BROAD BEAN WITKIEM

• Sow from early Feb onwards

  in a bright open situation and preferable upon ground containing been manured for any previous crop.

  Double rows 2in/5cm deep, spacing the in-row pair at 9in/23cm.

  Double rows should be 23cm (9in) apart, with a space of 40-60cm in front before the next set double row.

  Keep free of weeds.

  As soon as 4 clusters of bloom can be observed, pinch out the tops of the plants.

  When are Fava Beans Ready to Pick: Harvest the beans when the pods plump and well filled, but either slight or no seed development has occurred.
